What is a longarm machine?

Long arm sewing machines are about 12-10 feet long and have a long throat space. I personally use the Bernina Q20 which gives me 20 inches of space to quilt.

The Longarm comes with the sewing machine head, rollers and frame. They also require a dedicated space in your home to set up and use. Some say that long arm quilting machines are complex and may require a significant amount of time and practice to master. You can often find me practicing in between quilts on intricate panels.

Why longarm over a domestic machine?

With a longarm machine, you move the machine which sits on a carriage. With a domestic machine, you are constantly fighting the weight of the quilt as you move the quilt under the machines needle.
